Leadership in the Air Force
Right now, I am a full time student and a stay at home mom, as
well as working a few days a month at Kay Jewelers in the local
mall. However, I would like to reference the time I served in the
greatest branch of the military (in my opinion), the United States
Air Force (AF). Every situation and life experience has contributed
to the growth of my skills and abilities, and along with my values
and beliefs, the AF helped shape me into the person I am today
which includes my leadership style. The military has its own
organizational culture filled with a uniqueand diverse group of
people, and a structured leadership model. The difference between a
civilian leader and a military leader is the fact that military
leaders become leaders by appointment through regulations or when a
specific rank is achieved. In the military, if the lowerranks
cannot be motivated to follow their appointed leaders, then lawful
orders may be issued to ensure they do so. There is a rank
structure in the military as well and regulations which govern how
military members interact with one another. It goes in depth on how
the enlisted structure interacts, how the officer structure
interacts, and how the two interact with each other. For example,
an officer cannot have a personal relationship with an enlisted
member, unless they were married before one of them became an
officer. Also, higher ranking enlisted members cannot fraternize
with lower ranking enlisted members. There are reasons for these
regulations and respect for leadership plays a vital role. The
military spends a vast amount of money on training and education
programs, especially when it comes to the development of its
leaders. Military leaders have to make calm and calculated
decisions on a daily basis. When they know the best leadership
theory, power and influence on followers, transformational versus
transactional leadership styles, traits of effective leadership,
support for the organization, and

they say they are great and effective leaders in their
organizations. A Leadership TheoryThere is no one set definition of
a leader; however, an effective leader is someone who can inspire
vision, motivate people to embrace it, build a team to take it on,
and coach them along the way to be more effective in achieving the
vision. This can be a part of the leader’s leadership style.
According to Weiss (2015), “Leadership involves influencing others
to achieve a common goal, and with entrepreneurial leader this
often means doing things differently and often innovatively.” (Chap
1 intro). A considerable amount of research, along with many
studies, has been conducted on leadership theories. While some
people are natural born leaders, others have to learn what it takes
to be an effective lead
