Wound Care
Research Question: Is the team-nursing model more effective than the primary nursing model in preventing pressure ulcers among hospitalized patients with limited functional ability?
P – Hospitalized patients with limited functional ability
I – Team-nursing model
C- Primary nursing model
O – Prevention of pressure ulcers
According to Hyun et al. (2014), More than 2 million patients in the United States seek treatment for pressure ulcers every year. The annual cost of treating the ulcers is at least $9 billion. The costs relating to pressure ulcers increase considerably when one considers the associated lawsuits. I used the PICOT method to develop the clinical question. This method helped me to develop the core components of the question and produce a clear, precise and clinically relevant clinical question. The research question is important to my clinical practice because it will provide evidence to support the appropriate measures for reducing the cost of care due to the extended stay in hospitals, increased readmission rates, health complications and negligence lawsuits due to pressure ulcers (Moore, Webster, & Samuriwo, 2015). Meta-analysis refers to the statistical analysis of the findings of multiple studies with the objective of developing a summary of all studies included in the review of the literature. The main objective of a meta-analysis is to obtain a single-effect measure from the results of many studies. The combination of results from multiple studies supports a greater level of accuracy in evaluating the magnitude of the effects of a research in comparison to the estimates derived from individual studies (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2011). Therefore, meta-analysis leads to strong evidence that is easy to translate into clinical practice. Research-practice gap refers to the period between the time knowledge become available and the time at which healthcare providers start applying the knowledge in their practice.
