Unit I Assignment

Each chapter of your textbook begins with a case study that describes a current, real-life example of the concepts covered in that chapter. For your final paper (due at the end of Unit VIII), you will choose one of these case studies and write a four-eight page paper that analyzes the case study, discusses the science behind the case, and describes the policy issues surrounding the case. The case studies in the textbook should be used as a “jumping-off point” for your paper. You may use the textbook as a reference, but the majority of your paper must be researched from outside sources.

Your paper should follow thi

  1. Case study introduction
  2. Description of the environmental science behind the case study (For example, a case study on solar power use would include a discussion of how solar power works.)
  • Description of general policy issues surrounding the case study
  1. Detailed description and analysis of additional research on case study V. Conclusion

The paper will be a minimum of four-eight pages in length, double spaced, 12 point type, APA style (title page and reference page are not included in page length). Your paper must be supported by a minimum of five outside references from credible sources (i.e., peer reviewed journal articles, textbooks, internet search, and governmental position statements). Wikipedia is NOT an acceptable reference source for a research paper; it may NOT be used in this course. The CSU Online Library is an excellent source of resource material for research papers. To view a list of library resources and features, click on the My Library link in the Course Menu.

You may refer to the rubric to see how your paper will be graded. Notice that from the Resources menu, you may link to the CSU Writing Guide, APA Guide, the Success Center, and the CSU Online Library. These four links are valuable resources that you may access for assistance and references. Additionally, you can use your favorite Internet search engine to locate more information.

Your paper is due at the end of Unit VIII, and you must also complete a Unit VIII Assessment.  Therefore, the Unit I, Unit IV, and Unit VI graded assignments will require you to start working on your topic, outline, and research for your paper.

The Unit I Assignment is described below. See Units IV and VI for a description of the assignments due for those units. You may work ahead on these activities, so do not hesitate to get an early start on your paper!

For the Unit I Assignment, take a brief look at the case studies at the beginning of each chapter of the textbook.  Choose four that you would be most interested in using as a basis for your research paper, and turn in a document listing your choices. If you change your mind before your outline is due in Unit IV, you will be able to pick another scenario. The purpose of this assignment is to ensure that you look at your choices and think about where your interests lie. The document will be worth five points, so be sure to turn in this assignment by the end of Unit I.

Unit IV Assignment

For the Unit IV Assignment, make your final selection for your paper topic. Create a one-page outline of what you are going to cover in your paper. Your paper should follow this basic outline, but your outline should detail the specific topics you intend to cover:

  1. Case study introduction
  2. Description of the environmental science behind the case study (For example, a case study on solar power use would include a discussion of how solar power works.)
  • Description of general policy issues surrounding the case study
  1. Detailed description and analysis of additional research on case study
  2. Conclusion

The document will be worth five points, so be sure to turn in this assignment by the end of Unit IV.

Unit VI Assignment

At this point, you have made your final selection for your paper topic and created an outline. Your assignment for Unit VI is to provide an APA-formatted list of potential sources for your research paper. You should provide a list of at least five references, not including the textbook. You may add or subtract from this list as you complete your paper.

The document will be worth five points, so be sure to turn in this assignment by the end of Unit VI.
