Ideologies on Colonialism in the USA

Ideologies on Colonialism in the USA

The year 1776, saw United Colonies attain their freedom from their colonialists, the British. Before this, were a series of events that were vital to their victory. With United colonies coming together while in a state of exploitation, slavery, and imposition of high taxes, their vision was to end all these to attain freedom. The American natives had been fed up with their colonizers’ cruelty and were freely expressing their grievances and their perspectives on the leadership they wanted. Different ideologies were brought forth, demonstrating the need for the United Colonies’ liberation from their oppressors.

John Dickinson was against the seemingly destructive parliamentary act against the freedom of these colonies. Granting parliament all powers to control trade, provided it with the opportunity to impose a heavy-duty on trade items such as glass. The imposition of taxes was to increase revenue and promote the general welfare. To the British, trade was to be leveled. He was against the exportation duties that were imposed on the colonies alone as a way of collecting more revenue for the British. Dickinson advocated for peaceful measures to be employed in attaining independence. He discouraged people against trickeries used by those who posed as patriots of the country. He argued that at one point, every government might falter to wrong measures. Better ways of correcting mistakes should be formulated to enhance operation than standing against the governing body.

Patrick Henry was advocating for freedom through all means possible. He was radicalistic and did not hold his sentiments against colonial rule. He saw staying quiet to the British government would do more harm than good and consider himself disloyal and guilty to his country. Basing his argument on experience, he encouraged fellow citizens to resist the colonial rule’s ways. He was also against the British deploying forces as if they were enemies. He argued that despite all peaceful means to no avail, the only option they had left was to engage them in a physical fight. He was so determined that they would emerge, victors, since America had all the required arms and enough men to go to war. He believed that the Supreme Being was on their side. To him, physical engagement with their enemy was unavoidable whatsoever. He did not see the meaning of life and peace if only gotten while enslaved. He thought of it as an act of loyalty and patriotism for every individual to do what they are obliged to do for their country, fight for their freedom.

Thomas Paine argued that all humans were created equally according to the creation order. Thus, he was against a distinction of individuals as kings and subjects. He argued that times before, when there were no kings, there were no wars. He provides Holland as an example of a monarchy that enjoyed peace before having a king in the 17 thcentury. Paine stood against hereditary leadership, stressing the idea that no one was born superior to lead others. A leader might be good enough, but his successors might not have the leadership skills. For instance, a king may be equipped with the best leadership skills, which may not be in his sons who will take after him. He saw monarchies and succession leadership as the cornerstone of the wars that the world was facing. He applauded the leadership where an individual was chosen as per their abilities and skills to lead others against one being entitled to the throne.

Dickinson, Paine, and Henry are angry because the government has not followed the ideologies they think should be followed for the benefit of all. Dickinson argues that every government has its weaknesses, and replacing one government with another doesn’t eliminate the problems. He advocated for peaceful living with their colonialists, unlike Paine, who thought that freedom had to be gained by all means possible. He saw tranquil existence in slavery as committing treason against one’s nation. On the other hand, Henry was against hereditary leadership, where power was passed down in one generation. He believed that not all individuals of the same generation would have the capacity to lead better than their predecessors.

Dickinson’s View on People Proposing Independence

Dickinson referred to the individuals proposing independence as pretenders posing as patriots who only wanted to stir things up. He advised the citizens to watch out for these individuals and be cautious about them and their evil intentions.

Paine’s Different Thinking to Dickinson’s Ideology

Paine’s idea is quite different from Dickinson’s argument that all peaceful methods to settle with their colonial government that Dickinson suggested had failed. He saw war as a last resort to gaining the freedom that they so dearly wanted. He sees it as a vital thing to do for his country.

Henry’s different argument to Dickinson’s

Henry is against hereditary leadership, where power is passed down the generation from the father to the son. He feels that every individual should be chosen by others who see him fit to lead them. Unlike Henry, Dickinson saw no difference in governments, which often experienced many challenges. Therefore, he did not see the need for a revolution. Henry’s argument is logical in that not all born to the lineage of leadership have all abilities in place. He’s, however, not drawing his examples of monarchies that have maintained peace in their Kingdoms.

Colonists Ideas in the Lead to Independence

Dickinson fears that if the war broke out, the Americans would lose to the British. He foresees the action that will be fought without the hope of winning. On the other hand, pain and Henry think that the colonists need to be persuaded because they feel that they are mightier and superior to the British. They have hope that if every American rises against the colonialists, they are bound to victory.

The reason why Dickinson wants us to believe he’s a farmer

Knowing Dickinson as a farmer blocks us from questioning his professionalism instead of standing for the fellow citizens, he stands between the colonial government and the fellow citizens. As a lawyer, he was to take responsibility for guiding citizens on the best strategies to use to attain freedom.
