In America, the leading causes of death are cardiovascular disease, cancer, and chronic lower respiratory diseases (CDC, 2017). In regard to the top ten causes of death in this country, Hispanics have an overall lower death rate than Caucasians, with three exceptions; diabetes, chronic liver disease and kidney disease.
According to the CDC (2015), Hispanics are roughly 50% more likely to die from diabetes than Caucasians. While there are many predisposing factors involved, are primarily responsible for the high levels of obesity and diabetes among Hispanics (Martorell, 2005).
Certain lifestyle characteristics, if adopted, can have a positive impact on the lives of overweight and diabetic people alike. They include: following a healthy diet plan, maintaining an optimal body weight, not smoking, limiting alcoholconsumption, and engaging in at least 150 minutes of physical activity such as brisk walking or jogging each week (NIH, 2015).
Diabetes is not only a burden on the patient and family, but also accounts for a massive financial burden on our country as a whole. According to research released by the American Diabetes Association (2013), the total cost of diabetes in 2012 was a staggering 245 billion dollars, with the total cost of diabetes and prediabetes being 322 billion dollars. In 2015, the CDC released the National Diabetes Statistics Report stating that of the 29.1 million Americans with diabetes, 95% are Type 2 (CDC, 2014).
Research is now showing that weight loss, a healthydiet, and regular physical activity can delay or completely prevent development of Type 2 diabetes in up to 58% of people with prediabetes (CDC, 2016). Education on healthy lifestyle habits will not only increase public knowledge on diabetes prevention, but it has the potential to increase longevity as well as decrease the financial burden on America and its healthcare system as a whole.
